The USS ENTERPRISE, aka "Big E," was the second of the Yorktown Class aircraft carriers. Construction started in 1934, with a formal launch in 1936 and entry into service in 1938.
Due to bad weather, the ENTERPRISE nearly survived the unexpected Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Without further delay, ENTERPRISE was assigned combat duty against the Japanese.
During the Doolittle Raid, "Big E" served as a cover for the attack on the mainland. As part of the Guadalcanal campaign, Japan participated in the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Philippines, the Leyte Gulf, the Gilbert Islands, the Marshall Islands, Palau, Iwo Jima, and Ryukyu. As more aircraft carriers entered service, "Big E" took on Japan for a long time. The U.S. troops returned to the USA after WWII through "Operation Magic Carpet.". The Enterprise was decommissioned in 1947 and dismantled in 1958, yet the legend of "EnterpriseversusJapan" endures.
