In late 1987, following the introduction of new Formula 1 engine regulations by the FIA, teams that had been using turbocharged engines faced various challenges. The FIA not only imposed stricter limitations on turbocharged engines but also made the decision to officially prohibit their use in 1989. While the majority of teams transitioned to naturally aspirated engines in response to these new regulations, McLaren's engineers approached the situation differently. They recognized the potential advantages of turbocharged engines, focusing on lowering the centre of gravity and reducing drag in a Formula 1 car.
To achieve these goals, McLaren undertook several key modifications. They maximised the lowering of the vehicle, extended the front section, and adjusted the driver's seat angle from 45 degrees to 30 degrees. Concurrently, McLaren initiated a partnership with Honda. The RA168E turbocharged engine was seamlessly integrated into the overall bodywork design. This meticulous process resulted in the creation of a highly competitive racing car, known as the McLaren MP4/4.
The exceptional driving skills of Ayrton Senna, considered a genius, and 'The Professor' Alain Prost played a pivotal role in establishing the McLaren MP4/4 as a legendary contender. These two exceptional drivers alternated in securing victories during the 1988 season. In this remarkable campaign, Ayrton Senna clinched his first Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship, and McLaren secured the Formula 1 World Constructors’ Championship with an impressive total of 199 points. This season marked the birth of an enduring legend in Formula 1 history.
