Hurdy Gurdy Instrument

The hurdy-gurdy string instrument sounds like a bagpipe by using a hand-turned wheel that rubs against the strings, similar to how a violin bow and fiddle operate together.

The origins of this instrument stretch back to the fifteenth century. The organistrum, a portable organ, was one of the oldest types of Hurdy-Gurdy in medieval Europe. It underwent several alterations to become a widespread instrument among travelling musicians in England. In the latter 17th and early 18th centuries, it experienced a renaissance as more of a noble-class musical instrument for the enjoyment of the wealthy.

The hurdy-gurdy mechanism was integrated into the guitar or lute body, and artisans adorned those instruments with inlays and carving. Hurdy-Gurdy music has been referred to as "medieval rock'n'roll," which we think is quite fantastic.

Ugears engineers combined their collective vision with the craftsmanship of medieval artisans to create something new. The Hurdy-gurdy kit is an iconic image of medieval life and adventure.
