"Houston, we've had a problem", Apollo 13 CSM & LM (50th Anniversary)
One of the most famous spaceflight was Apollo 13, which was supposed to be NASA’s third crewed mission to land on the Moon. However, after the spacecraft was launched on 11 April 1970, any lunar landing had to be aborted after an oxygen tank accidentally exploded in the Service Module (SM). Rather than landing on the Moon, the spacecraft looped around it and the three-man crew returned safely to Earth on 17 April. With a shortage of oxygen for life support and propulsion systems, the controllers and crew were forced to improvise to get home safely, a saga that has been dramatized several times in movies. Now, approaching the 50th anniversary of the event, Dragon has released a special 1/72 scale kit of Apollo 13 to honor the courage of those involved.
Model-makers can make either SM in pristine condition as at launch, or the SM after it had been damaged by the explosion. The latter version has an external panel ripped off, and part of the interior is visible. With the 50th anniversary of Apollo 13 fast approaching, modelers can relive this dramatic episode in a unique way with a fine 1/72 scale kit.
