From its initial test flights in 1970 until its retirement in 2006, the F-14 Tomcat, a fighter designed for carrier-based operations, has been a source of fascination. Its defining feature, the variable sweep wing, allowed for automatic adjustments to achieve optimal performance, resulting in an impressive combination of speed and manoeuvrability. Equipped with the potent AN/AWG-9 fire control system, it could effectively employ AIM-54 Phoenix missiles to engage multiple targets from a distance. Out of the 632 Tomcats provided to the U.S. Navy, 477 were of the early F-14A variant. These were first deployed to carrier squadrons in 1973, and their combat debut occurred during the 1975 evacuation of Saigon. Subsequently, the F-14A saw action in conflicts in Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Notably, prior to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran received seventy-nine F-14As, with some of them still in operational use today.
