The Golden Gate Bridge is a sculptural suspension bridge that spans San Francisco Bay and is one of the city's most iconic landmarks.  The construction of the bridge was motivated by the necessity to go from San Francisco to Marin, and the ferry traffic in San Francisco Bay had become far too congested. The Golden Gate Bridge's construction began in 1933 and was completed in 1937.

The bridge allows pedestrian and bicycle traffic and is part of the US Bicycle Route. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized icons of San Francisco and California.  Engineer Joseph Strauss designed it in 1917. The Golden Gate Bridge was called after the channel it crosses, the Golden Gate Strait.
