The Iron Throne finds its origins from the popular series Game of Thrones based on the books by George R. R. Martin. In the books and the HBO tv series, the Iron Throne is located in the Great Hall of the Red Keep at King’s Landing and it is the throne used by the King of the Andals, the First Men & the Rhoynar.
This iconic throne was forged during the reign of Aegon the Conqueror from House Targaryen who is rumoured to have the throne built using a thousand iron swords surrendered to him upon his conquest. These swords were melted by the fire breath of Aegon’s dragon Balerion, and bent into the shape of a mighty, but dangerous throne with swords protruding from its top.
Apart from the King, only the King’s Hand has the permission to sit on the Iron Throne in his absence.
