From the middle of World War II until its completion, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 and the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 battled together to defend Germany. During its first years in service, the Fw 190 A-3 version outperformed the RAF's Spitfire Mk.V.
The Luftfahrtministerium commissioned and built a self-supporting low wing with an operational Fw-190 coating in the fall of 1937. Kurt Tank proposed two different forms of propulsion, the first utilising a liquid-cooled Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine and the second utilising a brand-new BMW 139 radial engine. Obering R. Blaser headed the project after it was chosen, and it began in the spring of 1938. The Fw-190V1's first prototype was ready in May 1939, and Captain Hans Sander flew it in Bremen on June 1 of that same year. In October 1939, the FW-190V2, the second prototype, made its first flight. FW 190 Australia was equipped with two MG131 and two MG17 machine guns, both 7.92 mm calibre.
Both had a tunnel air inlet in the propeller cap to minimise aerodynamic drag, but issues with engine overheating led to a return to the tried-and-true NACA shield design. Before the actual testing of these prototypes began, the decision had already been made to swap out the weaker, longer, and heavier BMW 139 engine for a more powerful BMW 801. After many modifications, it faced the centre of gravity issues. At the beginning of 1940, the Fw-190 V 5 with the new engine was built after the third and fourth prototypes were destroyed.
After going through several changes, it got wings with a one-metre-longer wingspan, which reduced its top speed by 10 km/h but boosted its ascent rate and enhanced manoeuvrability. Focke Wulf FW 190 was one of the best fighters of World War II, more than 20,000 aircraft were made throughout the conflict.
