The EA-18G Growler, is an electronic attack version derived from the F/A-18F. Its flight performance closely resembles that of the F/A-18E/F, allowing it to conduct both escort jamming and traditional standoff jamming missions. In attack missions, Growlers can accompany F/A-18s throughout all phases.
Comprising over 90% of the standard Super Hornet, the Growler shares its airframe, Raytheon AN/APG-79 AESA radar, and the AN/AYK-22 Stores Management System. The internal 20 mm cannon space now houses most of the dedicated airborne electronic attack equipment, with additional equipment on the wingtips. Nine weapons stations remain available for extra weaponry or jamming pods.
The added electronic components include AN/ALQ-218 wideband receivers on the wingtips and ALQ-99 high and low-band tactical jamming pods. This combination forms a comprehensive electronic warfare suite capable of detecting and jamming all known surface-to-air threats.
The EA-18G can be equipped with up to five ALQ-99 jamming pods, typically accompanied by two AIM-120 self-defence missiles and two AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation (HARM) missiles.
